First run of the Year!

I’m starting this year off on the right foot. I wrapped up this weeks running with almost 20 miles, and I was able to get in a 5K this afternoon. Of course the rain started immediately when I opened the door to go outside to start, but I was not going to let that stop me today. I have a goal this year to really increase my milage. I’m not sure what that means for numbers and distance, but I want to run a minium of 2-3 times a week.

I’m going to put a couple of 5Ks, 10Ks, and even another Half-Marathon on the Calendar for 2012. Here’s to a great running year in 2012 Cheers!!

My last post, almost a year ago now, was about this GPS watch. I just picked one up today with some Christmas cash. I got a killer deal from one of my local running stores. I can’t wait to start logging some miles with this guy!

An Unexpected Encounter …

I was out on my run today and I was not planning on heading to downtown Phoenixville. Then at the last minute I changed my mind and headed down the big bridge into town. I rounded the corner and headed toward the Historic Colonial Theater. As I approached the theater I saw a couple of guys talking with each other and as I got closer realized they were both barefoot. The one was showing the other the proper way to run barefoot.)

I stopped when I got next to them to chat with them, and realized that I recognized one of them … It was this guy!!

Christopher McDougall - Author of “Born to Run“

What a great guy! He was really down to earth. We talked for about 10 minutes before he had to head back inside the Colonial Theater, but what an awesome surprise!

For those of you that don’t know it was his book that got me excited about the idea of barefoot/minimalist running. Before I read this book I had to give up my running shoes and I didn’t think I would ever run again.

What a great feeling … to be able to meet one of the people that pushed you to do what you didn’t think was possible.

2 Weeks Until My First Half-Marathon

This spring has flown by! I cannot believe tomorrow marks only two weeks to go before my first Half-Marathon in Wyomissing, PA. The Half-Saur Half-Kraut will be held on June 13th. I’ve been training for the last couple months and I am feeling pretty good.

Last summer I almost had to hang-up running all together. The pain in the arches of my feet was so bad that I could barely run 2-3 miles every couple weeks and those few miles were torture. I was slowly coming to grips that this might become a reality and as the fall set in I set my shoes aside.

Then one of my friends told me about Vibram Five Fingers and how they have changed his running and the nagging back pain that had been with him for 10+ years. I started to do my own research and came across the barefoot / minimlist running movement. I also picked up the book “Born to Run” which besides being an amazing recount of a man’s journey to discover the ‘Running People’ is also an encouraging book about turning yourself into a runner. It changed my perspective on how God created our bodies and the great things we are able to accomplish.

In late fall I purchased my first pair of Vibram Five Fingers shoes and started the slow process of getting used to them. Within 2 weeks I was out running again. With none of the pain that I had been feeling for the last 4 years! Sure I was sore, but this was a different sore. My knees and hips didn’t ache the next morning. I thought to myself, “I found my answer. I am going to be a runner again!!” I am now running 8+ miles at a time, and feeling great!

Running long distance running is not easy. It’s a constant battle of the mind. It’s about over coming what your brain is trying to tell you your body shouldn’t be able to do.

This summer my goal is to complete my first half-marathon at a maximun pace of 10 min miles (Deep inside I would like to see 9 min miles on that board) So far in my training I’ve been averaging ~9:30 min miles. I feel strongly that I will complete the half at a 10 min . . or better pace. Then who knows maybe next year I’ll step it up and do my first FULL marathon. Thank goodness for my new found best friends . . My Vibram Five Fingers.

iPhone OS 4.0 is in sight. What does it mean for you?

Apple announced today that they will be releasing the next version of their mobile software this summer - iPhone OS 4.0. The announcement came on the heals of the highly anticipated iPad launch.

What does 4.0 do that my old 3.2 doesn’t?

  • Multitasking - It’s FINALLY HERE! … if you have a 3Gs.
  • Customizable Wallpaper - Apple introduced this on the iPad and those that jailbreak their phones have had this option for a while now.
  • Game Center - Similar to XBox live it that users can share achievements and see leaderboards for the games they are playing.
  • iAd - Apples new Ad network they are now sharing a 60/40% split with their advertisers.
  • iBooks - Yup, you guessed it, Apple is pushing the iBook app they launched on the iPad just a few short days ago to the iPhone.
  • Email Enhancements to mail.app - Merge your inbox, swap quickly between inboxes, now you have the ability to sync more than one Exchange account. Apple is finally catching on that people like the idea of threaded messaging and in-app attachment viewing. Something I know I’ve been missing as I’ve been spoiled by gmail.

These are a few of the new things the users will see. There are over 1,500 new API’s for the developers to build on. Looks like the app store won’t be getting an easier to browse.

We can only hope that “Summer” to Apple means June/July rather than Sept/Oct. Oh and when is my new iPhone 4.0 Hardware coming? I’m ready to give you more money Steve Jobs! What are your thoughts on the announcement? Lets chat!
